Buddhist and Hindu Art

This is a course designed to introduce the images, iconography and meaning of art and architecture in the Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The goal is to introduce students through a few examples to the vast array of Southeast Asian art and to achieve visual literacy, which means being able to analyze and articulate how art conveys meaning to and solicits reactions from its audience.

Notes to Students:
General information about writing an analysis (or research) paper.
--The idea is that you are learning to do research using digital sources. Learn to dig.
-- Always use your own words, no cutting and pasting from any sites. --I don't like using quotes because students tend to use them to stand-in for actually saying things. Avoid quotes and/or use correctly--as support.

Notes to Students:
General information about writing an analysis (or research) paper.
--The idea is that you are learning to do research using digital sources. Learn to dig.
If your analysis only uses sources from the Met Website main pages for the images, that's usually a minimum C grade.
-- Citations and References are 2 different things.
-- You cannot use a quote to stand in for an analysis. A quote is only used to support something you have already said in your own words.
--Watch capitalization and spelling.
-- Do not just say things without support. This can often happen in an introduction when students feel they have to provide foundation. Know what you are talking about.
